People with trivial defects or surgically corrected hearts should be able to
lead normal lives, but it may be wise in some instances not to become involved in
a job which requires a lot of hard physical work out of doors. The Armed Services
are not willing to accept people who have had an operation even though they may
be fit. Some employers may be reluctant to employ people who have a history of
heart problems because of their insurance schemes and not because of any doubt
about physical abilities. This is a problem which is receiving wider discussion.
Your doctor, together with the careers master at school and the university
careers advice service, should be capable of giving help and advice.
