What is the risk of coronary artery surgery?

Hospital mortality (death within 30 days of the operation) is as low as
1% to 2% for coronary artery surgery procedures. This is a very low risk
figure and indicates the tremendous success of this type of surgery. The risk
is greater in patients whose heart muscle has previously been severely
damaged by major heart attacks. More than 10,000 patients have coronary
surgery procedures in the UK each year.
