What is Memory and concentration

It is quite common to have difficulty in remembering new information
after a stroke. This makes it harder to learn new ways of coping with dressing
and other activities of daily living. There may be the loss of the ability, to
remember pieces of information in sequence, like all the digits of a telephone
number or putting on pants, socks, trousers and then shoes. Presenting new
information one step at a time and giving plenty of encouragement with each
achievement will help.
Sometimes a person who has learned to get up from a chair by the bed
cannot manage to get up from a similar chair in another room. Or having
learned to clean their teeth after washing their face, cannot clean them
without washing first. Quite minor changes in routine can make the person
confused and irritable, so it is best to keep to a regular routine where possible.
When someone cannot remember the time of day or the day of the week it
can help to give landmarks, like discussing the next meal or the match on
Saturday.
People often have difficulty concentrating after a stroke. This may be due to
a perceptual defect: reading a book is difficult for someone who keeps losing the
place on the page. It may be due to fatigue: it is harder to concentrate when tired
and this will improve as stamina increases.
