Any treatment the family doctor advises for high blood pressure or for too
much fat in the blood-stream must be strictly observed, and alcoholic drinks
should be taken only with caution and well-diluted, as their action may be
enhanced by the effects of the stroke.
Weight should be kept down by eating less fat and less sugar, cakes and
biscuits. Mental and physical activity should be encouraged. If possible, try to
ensure that every day a little more exercise is taken out of doors and a little more
effort put into each action.
It is advisable to cut down cigarette smoking and preferably to give it up
because there is proof that this does harm to the heart and blood vessels, and
disease of the arteries is the cause of most strokes.
