It has been accepted that the operation is doing nothing to the
underlying cause of the disease, which is not well understood. Therefore, in
a proportion of patients, pain may recur as the disease progresses. At present it seems that this occurs in approximately 5% each year. If the pain
does come back, it is likely that further special X-ray studies will be
advised, and depending on the results, another operation may be considered
in a minority of patients.
