What is Alcohol

Many people enjoy alcohol and there seems little doubt that in
moderation it is not harmful to the heart. However, it is a potent source of
calories and anyone who is overweight or worried about putting on weight
should recognise this fact. Recommended limits are currently 21 units/week
for men and 14 units/week for women but are defined in general terms for
the “average” person and are concerned with physical illness. They do not
relate to the effect of alcohol on reflex action e.g., driving, or on social
behaviour. They should not be regarded as indicating “desirable” or
“acceptable” intakes of alcohol and many would regard 14 units/week for
men and 7 units/week for women as more reasonable guidelines for those
who want to drink. Half a pint of beer is approximately equivalent to a glass
of wine or single measure of spirits (each equals one drink or unit). Low
alcohol or alcoholfree drinks are readily available for those who feel they
need a drink in their hands on social occasions.
