If swallowing food is a problem a speech therapist should be asked to
help.
When the affected hand has limited grip, cutlery with extra thick
handles will be easier to hold. A cheese knife with a sharp curved blade can
be used to cut through food with downward pressure and a rocking action. It
is safest to eat the food, American fashion, with an ordinary fork.
A plate with a vertical rim is better than a flat plate for getting food
onto a fork with one hand. Carefully chosen food, like mashed potato to pick
up peas, will help. A plate with a hot water compartment will keep food
warm for longer if slow eating is a problem. Buy a plain design, not one
with a childish pattern.
